Back to work help

Hi everyone

I am due to start a new full time job on Monday after 8 months unemployed, I am currently claiming JSA although I have been receiving no money as I chose to take a part-time job rather than live off benefits. I have arranged an interview for tomorrow morning with my New Deal Advisor to sign off and find out what help I can get. My new job is 50 miles from my home but my car is currently declared SORN as I have not been able to afford the repairs for its MOT & Tax so I have decided that the best way to get to work each day is bus, it is only £27 per week so I will probably choose this option even when my car is back on the road. I was just keen to find out if anybody on here knew if I could get help with the cost of getting my car back on the road (around £200) or will I be able to get any help with cost of bus fares for the first month? I know I am entitled to a month of Housing and Council Tax Benefits and also of the Advisor Discretionary Fund where I may be able to get help with some clothes for my work ( I need shirts, shoes and trousers) is there anything else anyone knows of that I should ask about? I am not looking to milk every penny out of them but if I can get some help to make my transition back into work as smooth as possible then I do not want to miss out on it as this job is extremely important to me. Thankyou :)

The ADF may be able to help with your car repairs if you state your case for it! Nothing to lose, surely?

That was what I had been thinking. I am not going to count on it, as I say I will probably get the bus anyway, with the price of fuel these days it will work out cheaper. But it would be extremely handy to have my car available if for any reason I miss the bus or something happens that, without my car, may make me late for work.

They MAY help you with the cost of travel until your first payday. It is as the name implies - at their discretion. If they do help, it will be the cheapest (to them) option and that sounds as though it will be the bus and then be in the form of a travel pass.

    Good luck.
