Ebay buyer hasn't picked up package from post office for a week :(

I sold an item on ebay, auction finished last Sunday evening (5th). The buyer paid straight away and I posted it the next day special delivery.
The royal mail tracker says it was attempted delivery on Tuesday last week but no one was in so they left a card with instructions. The tracker still says that a week later.
I've sent the buyer 2 or 3 messages singe they won the auction, but they haven't replied.
Should I just wait? What's likely to be happening here?
How long before royal mail return the item to me? It has a return address on it.

SD items are held for 7 days before returning if not claimed."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100

I'd try giving the buyer a call, you can get their contact details via the 'contact details' on ebay.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. You can get items redelivered for free (within 7 days) - only takes a phone call by the intended recipient.
They were well enough to log on to buy & pay for the item."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

If he's anything like my postie, he may not have actually leave a card, meaning that it could be sat awaiting collection and the recipient has no clue.We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0 -

Buyer could also be dead, that happened to me a few years ago...explains why I didn't get payment...could explain why the buyer isn't collecting the item.
It's not really your problems right now, wait until the item is returned to you and figure out what to do next (probably refund and relist). We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0 -

What happens with refunding the buyer if I don't get anywhere? Do I have to refund the postage too?
I would be inclined to see what the buyer wants. Either offer to send the item again if they pay the postage again first or offer to refund the item less p+p & ebay fees.
(but I think if the buyer pushed matters with a claim, they'd probably get a full refund)"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Death is actually the most common cause of eBay non-payments.
Or so many "buyers" would like us to beleive!!
Sadly for the OP, if the custoemr does not collect, it will be returned to you, and if they then recover and start an Item Not Received claim, then you'll be highly likely to lose, and they'll receive a complete refund. Ultimately, it is the sellers responsibility to get the item to the customer, even if they do play hard to get.
Just perservere with trying to contact them.<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0
