  • I recently changed my phone provider, mainley because BT were stealing £102 pounds per month from me. I am now 267 pound in credit. Bt mad no attempt to reduce my Deriect Debit amounts so I cancelld it. How can I get my 267 pounds back from this company without having to speak to someone in Puni India?

    :( I cant remember exactly how long ago it was I signed up for BT Fon wireless internet, it is definately over a year! possibly 2! I now know why I have been so short of money on my bank account! I found this out by going to the bank to cancel some DD's and had to cancel 3 DD's as one had been cancelled already for non payment! I recall recieving a letter stating I hadnt paid once and then recieving 3 others saying thanks for the payment. I thought this was odd and a waste of paper as they appeared just days apart but i assumed it was a clerical error! I now know that for some reason BT had opened 4!! separate accounts in my name at the same address. Yes thats right those extra letters were actually all charging me and not clerical errors! There have been times when I've gone so short of money due to this that I struggled to feed my family! I only wish I had noticed this earlier to save getting into debt with other companies due to the fact BT would whip the money out of my account before the other bills were payed :( Is there any way I can claim this money back as I was paying almost £60 a month instead of £15.. Thats a LOT of money over nearly 2 years and as I only applied once for an account surely that is BT's mistake to pay for not mine? Hopefully I can come to a conclusion with BT and not have to involve a solicitor. These are hard times for me so I cannot just cancel them and overlook it. Any helpful advice will be greatly appriciated.

  • I see both sides of this one.

    Firstly, so far as I can see, BT have no obligation at all to offer "budget plans". Indeed they actually run a credit risk as a result of doing so. It is of benefit to customers who want to see fixed monthly outgoings on a service whose usage is variable.

    On the other hand, the customer might think "Ah, my usage has gone up. I'll cut back". But the computer that works out the forward billing doesn't know this and thanks to the aforementioned credit risk, is going to err on the side of upping the bill to be on the safe side.

    Indeed I've seen posts where people have complained that BT "allowed" them to get into debt by not increasing the amount in due time, and then expecting a larger payment later on.

    The cynical part of me does think that if you hand over control of your finances (which is what you're doing to some degree) to your supplier, again thanks to the above credit risks, and of course, the supplier's own financial interests, it's hardly surprising that the monthly amounts sometimes seem on the sharpish side. Seems to apply to energy companies as well.

    I'm not saying that the customer is always in the wrong. That the customer shouldn't expect the amounts to be calculated on some basis of fairness and reasonability. And insisting on sending cheques which take weeks to turn up if at all does no favours in terms of the customer's opinion of them. It's short sighted too because we're talking about tiny amounts of money here (relatively) and the customer might well be inclined to avoid the company in the future.

    But I do come back to the point that BT don't have to offer this to anyone and the customer is always able to change back to being billed for usage in a period, and paying that (variable) bill. After all it's the customer who determines the usage not the supplier.
