Giving Car to Mum, No log book

Hi, I am giving my car to my mum in payment for money I owe her. I can't find my log book and wondered if anyone knew how we could avoid getting a new one as it'll be changed over to her name anyway. Many thanks

Fairly sure that you need a log book in order to change the name over to your Mother.
  • Thanks. just wondering what would happen if you bought a car without a log book, as I know some people do. Think there must be a form my mum could fill in to say she received the car without one and a apply for one in her name. Saw a post on another site where a mechanic said you can but annoyingly he didn't say what you had to do!

You need form V62 from here or you can get it at Post Office.

Get your mum to fill it out with her details, you write a covering letter stating you sold/transferred car to mum on x date etc. Staple together and send off with cheque or postal order for £25.

Your mum should get V5C in 3-6 weeks, and you'll get letter confirming you are no longer keeper.

If you can find the little green tear off slip from the logbook - new keeper's supplement V5C/2 - then send this stapled to V62 form and it will be free

  • Thanks again, that's really kind. He was talking about a way round it that's free but if I can't get hold of him to ask i'll do that. :T

The only 'free' way is if you have the original logbook or the green slip I mentioned.
