Customs

Hi -
Hopefully someone here can help with this query -
I am wishing to buy an item on ebay.com - located in Japan. The item will cost $400 dollars and here it is nearer £500. The seller has said he puts $100 declaration on all his parcels.
Will customs charge me on the basis of the UK value or what I actually paid? Does anyone know how much I am liable to be charged? I want the seller to put the real price on it as I'm afraid customs would hammer me thinking I'm trying to avoid duty. Although the item is motorcycle clothing - do they go and research it's real value or take it that the price on the declaration is the real price? It's the sort of thing that unless the particular person knows a lot about motorbike clothing -it could be worth anything really!
Thanks in advance

The charges will be based on the US price. These will be import tax (if applicable), VAT & a courier handling charge (£8 - £12). Its better that the seller puts the proper value as I believe its the receiver that gets in trouble if this is wrong.0

They could ask you to pay more. Personally I would leave it upto the seller and don't have any correspondence on the matter that would leave a paper trail. Work on about 20% to cover duty, vat and clkearing charges.0

Remember, you are the importer. It's up to you to ensure the right customs declaration is made ... even though you don't fill it in.
If HMRC don't agree with the customs declaration, you'll be charged duty at the vlaue they put on the item ... or perhaps they'll just sieze the item instead.
If a seller is prepared to cheat HMRC, I guess they wouldn't think twice about cheating anyone else (such as a buyer), Why deal with them?"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
I bought a dress from an ebay seller in the US, paid $34 including her postage charges, but she put on the customs form that the value was $100, which meant I got charged more than the actual price I had paid by customs charges, which I had to pay on top of the price paid to the seller. I guess that shows that they just take the advice of the seller in determining the value.0

Meaning if the parcel goes missing you end up with $100?"Love you Dave Brooker! x"
