Get Flash here directly from Adobe's site, who now maintain Flash: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

If you want to watch downloaded films, say in Windows Media player, you might need some codecs. I recommend you start off with K-Lite's Basic Codec Pack, found here: http://www.free-codecs.com/K_lite_codec_pack_download.htm

Isn't that a little OTT for basic web browsing? In most cases, Flash is all you need and should you stumble across something that requires a different plugin there's usually a link somewhere on the page pointing you towards the necessary installer.

Here's my shortlist of extras: That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. :)

I quite agree, but in this case the OP asked about codecs.

So why not suggest just the ones needed to play stuff commonly found embedded in web pages?

I can only think of two - Quicktime and DivX - neither of which I consider to be necessary. About the only useful thing the former does is allow you to play MP3 files without running an external application, something my Ubuntu-sporting netbook can do virtually out of the box!

On a not-unrelated note, any idea where one can find a browser plugin for VLC?

I suggest you visit this Adobe page it will test if the most recent flash & shockwave are installed & if not install them there is also the link to do the same with authorware.

Are you sure the Shockwave plugin is necessary? I haven't seen a single non-Adobe web site that made use of it in years.

just install (and use) firefox...when you need a plugin to view page content it will tell you and either download it or direct you to the correct website.
