Bank Charges - The New Ones????

Having hijacked someone else post I have decided to see what everyone else expiriances are and what can be done.

The new thing I am finding with all of my banks is that they are sticking on daily charges, for going over the overdraft, no review fee, just a daily fee of between 5 - 7 pounds, up to a maximum of between 10 - 15 daily charges. Barclays call it an agreed emergancy overdraft, but charge 25 pounds for using it, 5 pounds daily for being in it, and 8 pounds for every transaction that is made for any amount whilst in it. The charges are charged the following month in the middle of the month, so really hard to avoid and budget for.

Alliance and Leicster are the same 5 pounds a day, charged the following month, plus a 25 pound fee, and even worse Alliance and Leicster is that they place a mark on your credit file. even though at the end of the month I bring the account into credit they have marked it down as being 2 months in arrears. Challenged this but have been told it is correct, they state that using an overdraft is an arrears of one month, going over an agreed overdraft is marked as being 2 months in arrears.

My main question is are these charges illegal? unfair? I know the are below the 12pounds that has been mentioned as being resonable, but when I have charges for more than 120 pouns in one month I think something needs to be done.

Anyone else having the same issues??
