sewing machine help

Hi guys,
I used to be a dab hand on a sewing machine for bits and pieces but havn't used one in ages.
Bought a little mini one for some crafty bits and bobs and was sitting down to go over it today. Have got it threaded but when I try and sew the top thread doesn't catch the bottom thread and so nothing actually gets sewn (if that makes any sense at all)
Got a feeling everything I knew about them has gone out my mind hehe and that this is a stupid question- but would rather ask the stupid question and get the answer than plod on in anguish lol.

not very sure either but could it be a tension problem?
not sure how to solve it hopefully someone clever will be along soon!0 -
I would recommend you post in the Old Style section of the forum, that's where the majority of the sewers are!I love surprises!0

Have you put the bottom bobbin in the right way up? Sometimes, if they are upside down, the top thread doesn't curl around it and catch it properly.
With no material in your machine, pull a couple of inches of thread through the needle and hold the end of this, then gently turn the handle and watch as the needle is lowered ... if the loop of cotton just skims over the surface and doesn't catch the bottom thread, try removing the bottom bobbin and replacing it the other way up. The bottom thread also needs to be pulled through a couple of inches, so the top thread has something to grab hold of.
You might also need to check that you have threaded your machine up properly.0
