Refunding buyer via cheque or bank transfer

Hi,

I need to make a refund for 2 tickets which were bought from me back in November last year. The problem is, I have no money in my paypal account and need to verify it before I can send more money.

So my question is - is it safe to issue a cheque refund to a buyer who paid via paypal? In case they start some small claims court case against me or something, would I be protected?

Many Thanks in advance

Personally, I would wait until your PayPal account is verified and send the refund through them as, if you send a cheque, a buyer *may* claim again through PayPal, leaving you out of pocket twice. eBay have released a statement, which Soolin has posted on the other MJ tickets thread, saying that all PayPal buyers will be refunded which it would be worth you reading. :)

You MUST refund through paypal. Don't consider any other method.

If the transaction was in November can he refund via paypal? I thought that option expired after 60 days or have I totally misunderstood?

    Hm, good question.
I would ring PP to see what their take is.
It would be beneficial in several ways to be able to refund - there are PP fees OP would be credited for a start.

Hi, thanks for the replies but I still haven't been able to refund the payment. Paypal says that I can't refund after 60 days!! Would it be really risky to refund by cheque... I don't seem to have any other option!?!

    Thanks again.
  • I think as long as your buyer is refunded they'll be happy with that. Check that it'll be ok with them to send a cheque though, as I've come across a few people who don't like receiving cheques for whatever reason.

Yeh she said it's fine, but I'm really only worried about my side! What if she starts a small claims court case or something, would I be protected?
  • As long as you can prove she received and cashed the cheque, I can't see her having a leg to stand on in Small Claims.

The original paypal payment remains capable of being chargebacked for up to 6 months if buyer goes through a credit card dispute.

Phone paypal, they can release sales to enable refunds after the 60 day cut off, I only found that out today as that is what ebay are suggesting for the MJ tickets.
