There was a similar competiton that I felt the same about a while back on Facebook, I can't remember who it was for, but you had to get 50 friends to acctually join the group in order to enter.
I thought the same thing, and didn't bother.2009 Wins.

Sorry to bump this but I don't get what the problem is. Online comps are largely a way to harvest email addresses to which they can send newsletters. This is an easier way - they get you to become a fan so information from them probably appears on a news feed so they can do short messages with very little effort.
