barclays letter - preapproved loan?

I keep getting a letter from Barclays (I bank with them) saying that I am preapproved for a loan of £5000, in the last letter it was £8000 ... they say "if your conditions haven't changed since you received this letter you are guaranted to get this "

I have no bad history ... but not too much history at all: I only have one credit card (with them, they have increased the credit limit by they own)
I have some plans but I keep saying next year (and trying to save as much as I can), if I could get a loan it would be great but I don't want to apply and get rejected.

Is there any small print in their letters that says anything about credit checks. The way I see it you should get the loan if you apply but of course their letter isn't a guarantee, its just offering you to apply.
  • I used to get the same letters every couple of months about a year ago, in the end I went in and spoke to them as I needed a loan to buy my car and pay off credit cards. The salesman, sorry personal banker, said that the letter is basically saying you'll be accepted, and I was. All I'd say is borrow the minimum you need and over the shortest possible time, don't do what I did and end up for a really high repayment over a stupidly long length of time.
