Advice please, my grandmother has got into a pickle

My nan suffers from early on set dementia. She was recently waiting for a new chequebook for her account to turn up, but got confused as to how many days had passed so went to the bank to say that it hadn't turned up. She went with my aunt.
First of all the teller told my nan she doesn't have chequebooks on her account but eventually agreed that she did and applied for another book to be sent out to her address. But without tell my nan or aunt she put a stop on the old chequebook and reported it stolen.
My nan gets home and low and behold the chequebook she was waiting for had turned up. So she used it (I mean why wouldn't she).
She wrote out two cheques one to my mother to pay for her shopping that my mother does fortnightly and one to her hairdresser.
My mum then receives a letter from her bank after she paid in the cheque saying that the paying bank had put a stop on the cheque due to fraud/theft. The amount that had been credited to my mothers account has now been debited back including a futher £10. In the letter it makes no mention of a charge but lists the cheque as being £27 and the amount debited as being £37.
Obviously my nan is now most upset as she has written a cheque for her hairdresser which will bounce and incur a charge.
What can we do to get the charges back?

Let the hairdresser know and get a payment to her asap.
Your grandmother should maybe consider an LPA, but in the meantime you write a letter for her to sign to the bank explaining what has happened and the problem it has caused and asking for them to put the charges back. You will probably send several letters, but in the end they should do as you ask. If your Gran has any savings with them, you could threaten to move these.0 -

she could ring the bank and get the stop taken of the chequebook that was cancelled or just the 1 cheque she wrote to the hairdresser depending on the bank.0
