Tough one!

Sorry for the long post, im really stuck!

I’ve been working at my current company for a little over 12 months and for the most part I’m happy. It’s a good job and it’s interesting, loads of challenges and i work with nice people and have a very good boss.

A few months ago i was concerned about the pay i was getting for my role, although it was on par for the level of experience i have it really didn’t reflect the level of responsibility i had within the company as I’m doing a job that is far more demanding than one would expect given my experience.

I took a deep breath and mentioned my concern in a diplomatic manner at my pre-appraisal chat. When my appraisal came around I was very pleased, I received a good pay raise ( over 10%) and the manager’s really acknowledged my hard work for the company they also decided to change my job title as my role had significantly changed from what i was initially intended to be doing for the company saying they wanted me to spend more time face to face with clients as clients really respond well to me.

Roll on a few months and im still happy in my job, it’s stressful and i feel like im constantly being asked to do new things, with alot of pressure for success, this isn’t a bad thing per say but i never seem to do the same job more than once, by the time i get to grips with one thing im asked to move to something new which i find frustrating, granted i guess it could be worse i could be bored. I guess it’s one of the downsides/perks of working in a small company.
When i originally took the job i was told there would be travel very occasionally but with my new client facing role i seem to be out of the office more and more which i find difficult as i have small children and being away for 3-4 days at a time is not practical, still i muddle on and enjoy my work.

A few days ago a job agent called me about a job offer having got his hands on a reasonably old copy of my CV from somewhere. The job sounded interesting and even though im in no-way looking for work i asked for the details i guess curiosity got the better of me.

Roll on a few days and i have spoken with the agent a very times regarding the position he’s trying to fill and have even spoken with the gentleman doing the hiring about the role. Now they are really eager to get me in for an interview, though the man hiring has already suggested that as long as i don’t punch him in the face, during the interview the job is mine.

Now im torn the job sounds wonderful, it would mean me specialising in an area i already work for allowing my to get my teeth into a major project rather that being the jack of all trade master of none i am now. None of the requirements they are asking for skill set wise are anything that scares me, they are all skills i do possess, however the nature of the project is huge in comparison to what im used to dealing with and i know it would provide a huge challenge.

The pay/benifit’s package they are offering is amazing far far better than what im currently earning but im really torn because i really am very happy where i am, my boss is lovely and we are a close knit team.

They are great when it comes to my children aside from the trips away as when ever my kids are sick etc they allow me to work from home and as a company they are generally very very accommodating regarding my family commitments.
Pay wise and Experience wise I can’t fault this new offer, but money isn’t everything?? Im happy where i am surely that counts for something??

However the money would provide a huge boost to my family, we are heavily in debt and on my current earnings it will take us 6 years of scrimping and saving to finally be debt free, however with the new job i could do it in 12months.

That’s not including the bonus scheme where its possible to earn 100% of your annual as a bonus!! (i asked what the average bonus was and they said 70% of the company earned 50%+ of their annual salary in bonus’s last year 20% gained 100% bonus and not a single employee got less than 30%) 30% alone would pay off half my debts!!! 100% would pay them all off AND get us a holiday!

What do you think? Am i mad?

unforotunately only you can make that decision. If the job is kosher and it offers you more time and money for your family and you trust these people, why not go for it if you are not so happy in your current job. if your current job offers you more security and thats what you are looking for then stay.

    Hi kts,

Go for the interview and see what happens. It all sounds great but I have seen these things unravel when it comes to a formal offer. At the moment the agency and the employer are trying their best to attract you, so it is all upside - of course, every job and every employer has its downside too.

Once you have the facts in writing, you can sit down and make your decision. Make a list of pros and cons for each job to help crystallise your thoughts. It's one of those times when you need to be a bit selfish, think what's best for yourself and your family, don't go too much on loyalty to your employer as remember you have done a lot for them too! The choice may not be easy, but it should be easier;).

It's a nice to feel wanted - enjoy it and good luck!
