    What about a nice book?
Don't think it would be too much to post and there are some beautiful books for children. You can write a personal message and it's something for them to keep.

I am a big fan of books!!

I agree with the book idea. My grandson lives in America, with his mummy and daddy ofcourse as he is only 17 month so I send him books regularly. We love this collection of books ... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thats-Bear-Touchy-Feely-Board-Books/dp/074605159X as there are lots to choose from so you can almost make it personal

  • You can get books and cd's of songs which are personalised to include the child's name. I'd guess a child would love a song about themselves!

  • If you want to go really personalised you can get books where the child is the main character - I have a Christmas one from years ago that my parents got me as a present. Some of them do ask for quite a bit of info about the child (mine has info about pets and siblings' names and probably some other stuff I forget) but I'm guessing you know your friend well enough to know those things!
