  • Its not illegal and is part and parcel of working in the care industry.

If they don't like it move to a job they like.

Would you prefer the nations OAP's and disabled persons are left uncared for between 10pm and 7am every day.

I trust you can clarify why it is illegal?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • It seem that is is accepted as part and parcel of working in the care industry, that doesn't make it right.

Its a requirement of the industry and I can't see how its wrong.

And it's not that easy to just up and leave to another job. Most carers love their jobs and wouldn't want to leave, and put up with the crappy hours to keep their jobs, too frightened for fear of reprisal to say anything about it.

Sorry but this is irrelevent, most jobs have a downside. those in that career need to offset these against the positives and make a decision. Care providers need there staff to do this.

And no, I wouldn't like people in care to not be looked after at night, but care providers should allocate proper night shifts to provide that care. The knoock on effect for the following day is that staff are so tired due to a bad nights sleep that they are not operating to their full ability the next day and can't support people properly.

And night shift staff who spend most of the time doing nothing isnt feasible thus why sleepovers are preferred. Financial constraints have to be considered

Imagine having to take someone shopping into a twon centre when you've had 3-4 hours max the night before, and that person relies on you for everything, from washing them in the morning to helping them toilet while you are out, deciding what to buy, managing public transport with a wheelchair...... Or working in an environment where you are hit or punched or verbally abused all day?

Sorry but the shifts are part of the job, as for the next part, irrelevent, if people are being punched or verbally abused this has to be reported and resolved with if necessary the revocation of care.

Normally you'd cope fine, but being away from home and not sleeping for that long will take it's toll on your patience. Especially as far as psychologically challenigng environments are concerned ie challening behaviour.

    Again part of the industry

This is the reason for the petition, to make people aware of the difficulty staff have to deal with working these hours.

Well 1) the petition is misleading, no laws are being broken on a wide scale and 2) most already appreciate the difficulty of this sort of work. However it is necessary work and anyone opting for work in the care industry need to realise and accept this otherwise seek alternative employment.

I also agree with DMG24 that you should confirm what illegal activities are occuring or remove your petition.

Why go into the care industry in the first place if you don't agree with the working hours or shift patterns?

If the employers are doing something illegal then an employment tribunal or a union if you have one is the place to air your grievience.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

If you have no proper rest break as you claim nor a staff room then you should be taking this up with your employer.

Providing 24 hour care is part and parcel of the industry that you are in - its the same in hospitals too.

If you are being physically harmed by the patients in your care then you should make a formal complaint to the management of the care home where you work.

So, you have to be on call whilst on nights - that's the same for doctors everywhere, they bunk down for a nap and have a pager to wake them.

If you don't like working in a care home - get another job or see if you can become a visitor who pops in once a day to tend to a person.

I think you should remove your petition as it has no standing in law - you chose the profession that you entered and were aware that you would have to work unsociable hours, its part and parcel of being a carer. I cannot see that anything illegal has taken place and I think you are arguing with the wrong people - the person you should be directing your complaints to is your employer.

So do you mean to say that they are actually working 2x 24 hour shifts? Haven't heard of that one before. Working a 12 hour shift would be difficult I imagine.

If you mean 24/7 shift rota then tough !!!! really. People need care and if those people aren't willing to do their job, then there are plenty of people waiting in the aisles. That's the way it is sunshine.

Btw, do any of these care companies have unions? You could always approach them.

But people working those hours are often "half asleep" anyway by doing two shifts together and mistakes are made this way. I worked nights and did two 10 hours and had 4 hours sleep in 72 hours and it was damn hard. I was like the walking dead in the end so I cannot imagine what it is like for people that do this regular. If it is illegal (often people will do it just to keep their jobs this day and age) then it needs addressing I think. I would prefer that someone looking after mine was alert and awake during a shift then i would know they are being properly cared for.

Look at it this way, would you want to take a pay cut and have reduced hours so your employer can take on a full time night shift worker so you can have an easy life.
care homes are on very tight budgets the money would have to come from somewhere
