Weird results in OpenDNS

What makes you think it's a botnet anyway?0

Admitidly DNS is not my speciality but please tell me what opendns has that your ISP doesn't offer? DNS in its name is Domain Name Resolution. If you can map your Domain Name to an IP address then what can be wrong? the fact that it's a non authorative answer? You lose 0.00002 secs for a forwarder? Why not add tags, headers and all the marketing bull. It's all frames and packets after all.
I can only see open DNS as a traffic gatherering excercise and a means to target marketing.
There has always, and will always be DNS servers that act as feeders.
Just my 2 cents....
DNS server goes down for whatever reason - No resolution (for the non-techies, no internet)
DNS server out of date not picking up changes - Site moves host and after 72 hours ISP server have not picked this up (this happens a lot)
DNS cache poisoned one way or another
There are lots of reasons to have OpenDNS as your secondary server and ISP as your first or as the OP uses them for blocking dodgy websites etc.
The reason is also as simple as why you shouldn't use your ISP for mail for several good reasons (except in my case as I am the ISP lol) as well, mail servers as well as DNS seem to be where ISPs spend the least amount of money with the only ones that get less spent on them being Usenet (for the obvious reasons)
No one is right or wrong here just horses for courses really there is no one solution0 -
lol, as a SECONDARY server yes, I see why this would be no problem at all. DR (Disater Recovery) would make sure you have mor ethan one source.
72 hours... Got to be a standard ISP, business ISP could not possibly get away with this lack of service..
I love the copy/paste engenious....
This isn't a competition, I'm offering advise and cannot take on the likes of wiki!
Add DSN hijacking as the new 'flavour' of botnets and then.... I0 -
Eh????I love the copy/paste engenious....
I know it's not a competition which was why I said there was no right or wrong answers don't really understand where you're coming from there?
Most of the ISPs i've seen over the years don't run seperate DNS for residential or commercial customers, in fact dealing with C+W who supplies the place I used to work at with 100Mb ethernet presentation to 50 sites their DNS was bloody terrible and they are business only LOL
As for the Wiki comment I don't really get what's got your back up i'm not getting into a willy waving contest but I am qualified enough that I don't need to copy and paste from Wiki's, google or wherever else thanks very much.
Think you should go to bed my friend
and ingenious is the spelling you're after

Pardon my ignorance, I didn't mean it like that
Is it possable that Bitdefender (or say any program) can use it's own DNS settings then? Seeling it's a bitdefender domain. But still, why would it show it as-if the domain had been resolved, broken up with -2e's... Just checked the computers DNS settings and there not changed to anything
I'm learning all the time so this is all new to me

Maybee your rite... lol
Apologies for the wiki comment.
You'd lose a willy waving contest... :rotfl:0 -
I use it because I can push my network policy to every PC that connects to my network (assuming they use the DNS provided by DHCP), and I then force all port-53 traffic to go to OpenDNS regardless. This helps ensure my network stays secure (botnet filtering and alerting, custom shortcuts, adware blocking at the DNS level etc. etc. etc.)
I also have stats turned off, so in theory they're not collecting any usage data from me. But irrespective, I have nothing to hide there, and it's considerably better than the awful DNS provided by TalkTalk.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j
