Overpayment of wages!

Long story short.. I was taken into the office yesterday and told that i have been overpaid in my wages for the past 9 years!!!! When i started someone forgot to tick the "term time" only box and i have been overpaid since that time. This has never been questioned by my employers or myself in that whole time as i just took my wage and never thought anything about it. I did not have a clue about this until yesterday and my employers only found out as someone else thought they were being underpaid and looked at my salary comparison. They have stated that they can make me pay this back, but as they feel this is morally wrong they have wrote the amount of. What i want to know is should i be worried. My partner said maybe they could ask for it back at a later date and if they did how would i have to pay it and can i dispute it. I could understand if the money was taken fraudently (sp) but it wasn't. My salary has never dramatically increased and i have never suspected that i have been paid to much. Am feeling a bit confused about the whole thing and just need some advice.
Thanks
Enigma

I understand why you are concerned.

Whilst I am a great believer in letting sleeping dogs lie, I think I might be tempted to write to your employer asking them to confirm what your actually salary is and that the overpayment will not need to be repaid.

    Hi

This happened to my OH last year, although his was caused by re-location expenses, which he was not entitled to. His employers are currently deducting the overpayment monthly, which they are entitled to do, so would suggest you get it in writing about them writing it off. OH did inform his wages department that he had reason to believe that he was not entitled to re-location expenses but his email was never answered!.
    Hope this helps ? x

You are very lucky they are agreeing to write it off! - Though I agree with them that it would be morally wrong to try and recoup something that hasn't been spotted for 9 years.

I would agree with the other posters, ask them (tactfully!) for confirmation in writing of the writing off of the overpayment and the correct details of your salary from now. Then forget about it!
