Any ideas? I went to Brighton last summer which was fab. Lots of shops to wander around in, a free museum and art gallery, and lots of other stuff to do as well.
So a town I can wander around for free and take lots of pictures preferably. I will probably take a packed lunch. Also I don't mind paying to go into a touristy place that is good and worth the money.
TIA

Windsor - if you have never done the castle it is quite good fun
Oxford (not sure how long it takes on a train) loads to wander round and see plus good shopping. Ashmolean is the oldest public museum in the world. http://www.oxford.gov.uk/tourism/
Cambridge (not been for 15 years but I remember it being really ideallic). Fitzwilliam Museum and Kettles yard are both meant to be good. http://www.visitcambridge.org/visitors/
Portsmouth (harbour area/outlet shopping place) - might be slightly more than an hour - you can get the megatrain cheap tickets though I think.
Kew Gardens/Richmond - I know strictly speaking in London but some people consider to be Surrey0 -
What about the historic city of Rochester. It ticks alot of your boxes:
It is a pretty & quaint!
It has a castle
It has a cathedral
Lots of references to Dickins
The cobble streets have unique shops
You can picnic in the castle grounds
Visit the nice pubs
It's a train ride from london. Try and get a direct and fast train (it stops at London Victoria, fast to Bromley south then fast to rochester. The journey is less than an hour. Or you can go from Charing X but it makes the journey a bit longer.

Ooooh I'd forgotten about Rochester. :j I might be able to drive there if I'm feeling brave, as I live the other end of the A2.
I used to visit there every year with my primary school. We'd go to a schools service at the catherdral and do lots of activites, then eat our lunch in the castle. Memories.
I like the sound of the other towns/cities as well. I shall have to start making a list of places to visit over the year.
Any more ideas? :question:0 -
Go to Rochester at the May Day weekend for the annual Sweeps Festival where there is morris dancing in the streets, beer tents etc.
Also try St Albans for its Abbey, roman remains and shopping. Big street market on Saturdays. Great town for wandering around. http://www.stalbans.gov.uk/tourism/attractions.htm0
