Insurance for people with a criminal record

Can anyone help?
My daughter was attacked last year by 2 women in a pub. Whilst defending herself she injured one, and was arrested, charged ,and convicted of assault.
She is now the posessor of a criminal record.
Whilst applying recently for contents insurance for her home, she was refused
because of her record after revealing it (some criminal eh! )
She is a divorced mother of 5. Her main worry is that she has a disabled son and receives motability allowance with which she buys and runs a car.
The company who refused her Insurance have insured the car for several years and we are worried that when renewal comes up they will refuse her.
We all have to pay for our mistakes, and she shouldn't have done what she did, but I ask myself , does nobody with a record drive a car, or don't they bother with Insurance. Surely there must be some way of getting cover legitimately

While I can't help with the main problem, http://www.lawontheweb.co.uk/rehabact.htm will tell you when the conviction will be disregarded ("spent") for insurance and other purposes.0

Is this on the Motability fleet insurance underwritten by Royal and SunAlliance? If so, ask them to reconsider and also see if Motability will intervene on her behalf.
Most insurers want to know about motoring convictions - for rating purposes - and fraud. Fraudsters would probably be declined for obvious reasons.
Since assault is not really related to either of these I would suggest the insurer has over-reacted and the case should be reviewed by someone higher up in the organisation.0 -
Sincere thanks to Aark and mattymoo for their quick response.
Whilst the information was always available sometimes you have trouble finding it.
Thanks guys, hope I can return the favour sometimes
