Job Offers

I now have 2 informal job offers with neither ready to employ, obviously I am progressing with both but I do have a preference.
My first is with the DWP, I have completed all the recruitment stages and they have now recieved my CRB, so hopefully not too much longer to wait for a post, this is my first choice position.
However I have now been offered a sales position in a local Tile shop, obviously not as good a job as the DWP but I have accepted it as for all I know something could happen with the DWP and it fall through.
The Tile Shop isnt yet in existence and the employer hopes to be ready to offer me my position in 2 - 3 weeks, so both jobs very close. But however if I take the Tile Shop job and a position is offered where would I stand if the DWP offered me a position a week or so later? can I just up and leave?
Any help please

Normally there is a notice period based on your wage frequency, i.e. paid weekly = 1 weeks notice, Monthly = 1 Month's notice.
You could quit, as it is unlikely a tile shop is going to pursue you for breach of contract, but I would just be careful about what contract you sign to, and remember you need to balance up long term prospects at both jobs. The DWP is not a guaranteed job for life, and they have made lots of redundancies, and with a change of Government next year it is likely the Conservatives will reduce Government office jobs.My Mind wanders, if found please return.0 -
The DWP isnt life guaranteed but it is 18 months, I will earn more in that 18 months that I will in the other employment and will gain much better experience.
I suppose my main concern is I am a man of morals and if I start my training with the TIle shop and get an offer 2 weeks in I am gonna feel bad deserting him.0 -
if it came to that i would just say to him that you have decided that this role isnt for you and give him plenty of notice and tell DWP that you have to give notice with your current employer0

I now have a start date for the Tile Shop vacancy, I start next monday, however I also rang DWP yesterday and my pre-employment checks are complete, they are just waiting for a start date from wherever I am going.0

The DWP job is better imo although in todays climate is either job safe,0

personally, I'd be looking to get a firm start date for the DWP job and if it's less than say 4 weeks wait for that and not do the other job at all if you can afford to wait, simply to keep the Cv clear with as little chopping and changing as possible...you need ot be planning ahead for a future interview when you may be asked what happened here and think about how a prospective future employer will view your actions now...For what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... I'm forgiving what I've done -AF since June 20070

I can only get a firm start date with the DWP when I get one, I do however have a start date for the other job.
I have to go through training and stuff before the new store opens, can I just walk out if the DWP offer me a start date?0 -
I would start the job that has given you a start date, when the DWP come up with a date just explain to the first job that you are leaving / hand in your notice dependent on how long you have been there.
Don't just walk out, let them know and keep it professional - you are not doing anything wrong just looking out for your best interests as employers do.Earning Swagbucks since May 2012

Ok well 2 updates, firstly I have been informed today that my checks are all complete and clear and to expect a call within a couple of days. secondly I recieved a letter from another company confirming a start date of Monday, more time apart I could handle but why so close together, I feel so bad stringing the other company along in case something falls through with the DWP0

If you do work for the tile shop for a few days and then leave, I am sure they will very quickly find a replacement.
I'm about to PM you with something.0
