not happy with cost of glasses

Can I just demand my money back and go elswhere?

The specsavers ad say 'Varifocal glasses give you clear vision at all distances,', so I decided to try them rather than having to buy 3 pair of glasses. (Distance, reading & computer). For 3 days I tried my 'free' pair but couldn't see further than about 6 feet. No good for a driver. Reading and near vision was fine. I gave up and went back. They said I wasn't looking through the correct part and tried manipulating the frames. I couldn't see any difference. To me there were only 2 slight differences not 3. The print out she did was different to my prescription but she told me the glasses were made up correctly.

I paid over £400 for ultralite frames and top of the range variofocals, and got a free pair for which I paid extra for reactions Anyway, I am now getting single vision lenses but they will only replace them with one prescription. When I pointed out this would leave me with no reading glasses, I was told to choose a frame from the cheap range.

I wont be getting a refund as they are now charging for all the free stuff like frames, scratch coating etc. I've worked out how much this would have cost if I had chosen single vision at the start and it comes to less than £300.

Their guarantee and clear priciing policy is worthless, they get your money then bump things up so you can't get a refund. What makes it worse, I really needed a pair of glasses for work but wont have any. I feel like I am paying more than I should.

Over a year ago Specsavers quoted me £400+ for the same "recipe" :( I couldn't possible afford it, I ended up taking my prescription to RealEyes (not many branches) and getting them for £200+ with existing frames. Since then my sight has deteriorated quite a bit, I'm dreading the cost.

I realise this doesn't help with your problem, but isn't it a drag that one has to pay so much if one can't tolerate heavy specs? :(

Get a quote from an internet retailer instead.

I am fortunate in not need such complex prescriptions. I struggle with my single pair so the thought of using 3 would simply be impossible. However given the difference in price, it is very tempting to rely on cheap reading glasses when embarking activities that require more reading, and then depending, another special dedicated to computer work, and then distance mainly for driving. The reading glasses tend to be quite cheap, the computer glasses should be subsidised by your employer, and you could get distance glasses for about £20 from the internet retailers.

3 days really isn't long enough to give varifocals a chance particulary if you haven't worn them before - they are waaayyyy different to single vision lenses.

My advice would be to persevere - when I worked in opticians we used to advise it could take about 2 weeks to get used to them.

And prescriptions for the lab can be different - that is nothing to worry about.
