How much to fix a small facial scar?

After years of thinking about whether to go ahead and have some treatment for a scar that i have at the side of my mouth I made an appointment to go to see a dermatologist for advice.

I have spent the last three years thinking about, looking on the internet, watching tv programmes, took the advice of another dermatologist (who has now retired) so I know i have take my time to get this far.

I would say exactly what it was i hoped to achieve and ask what would be the best way to go about it. I would then take the advice, come home, think again and then make a final decision.

I booked in, sat in the waiting area and after two or three minutes I was asked to go to see Dr Marina.

Everything had gone fine..... until I opened her door! She should have been wearing a stetson.

She asked what I had gone to see her for and I got as far as "I have a scar"

Apparently she didnt need to know anything else.

She suggested I have laser surgery. I said I wasnt sure.
She suggested I have thermage. I said I would not be doing that.
She said I should buy some creams from her. I said I would not be doing that.
She suggested botox. I said I would not be doing that.
She suggested fillers. I said I would consider that.
She said fillers would not do the trick and that I should have fat transfer. I said no!
She said lip augmentation would be good. I said no.
She drew diagram after diagram, none explained the effect any of the above would have on my scar.
She said we could start right now. I said I needed the information so i could go away and make an informed decision.
She said she would do anything i wanted if we started now. I said no!
She said certain treatments were at half price until next Wednesday so better start now. I said no!!!!

I then insisted that she listen to what it was that I wanted. That the scar at the side of my mouth bothered me, nothing else. I wanted to know what effect a filler would be on the scar.
She told me fillers could give up to a 70% improvement to the scar.

At last, she had listened. She then carried on.

I would need all the other treatments ie., fraxel, botox, creams, lip augmentation, non ablative laser, thermage, or my face would look old, lop sided and it was the only way to control my huge amount of sagging skin!

She explained that money was not important, asked what my husband thought of my face (!) said that I must be nicer on the inside and asked if we could make a start there and then.

I said no! I informed her that my husband loves everything about me! That I am indeed nice on the inside as well as the outside. That money was important and how much could i expect to pay for this butchery job to come out of her office looking like a total stranger?

She said 7500- 10000pounds!

Well my consultation cost me twenty pounds, could have been much worse it could have cost 25.

It was like dealing with a double glazing salesperson, i wont be going back to her - in fact I think i will live with the scar, I dont have sagging skin and I am very happy with the way i look

What is surprising is how much a so-called profressional can attempt to see your vulnerability and play on it, just to make money.

I think your best bet Mrsmoneypenny would be to have a word with your GP doctor about it and ask him to refer you privately to a consultant he knows of.

These sort of processes are pretty poorly regulated even in this country, and there are a lot of sharks in the water.

Well done on resisting the pressure. Someone who hadn't looked into it for so long might not have been so successful.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • Yes that was my next port of call. See the doc, explain the problem and then take his advice, give it some thought and then make an informed decision.

I am quite proud of my wrinkles, i worked hard to get them, its taken years and no one will be stealing them away from me.
