Adult brace to straighten teeth..any cheaper?

I have crap teeth. My dentist has suggested that I see an orthodontist which he reckons will cost £1500-2000. On top of that, he is going to veneer my teeth to make them look like Liz Hurley ( Hahaha)

I will have to remortgage my house to do this essential maintenance....any tips would be gratefully received!

    Hello sarahmoo

I had orthodontic treatment as a youngster so it was free on the NHS. I'm wondering why you didn't have treatment when you were younger?

It is extremely difficult to find an NHS dentist these days, so the chance of you getting orthodontic treatment on the NHS will be slim. Maybe someone will give you details of a NHS dentist (offering orthodontices)who is taking new patients.

    HI and thanks for replying

I have found a great NHS dentist, but this kind of 'cosmetic' treatment is all private....damn

I had lots of orthodontic treatment as a child but it was never properly sorted

    Ah welll!!

My teeth were pretty straight as a kid but it's as an adult that they've become a bit squint. It's only two or three teeth top front, the rest are fine. Mainly it's one of the front teeth which has turned a bit.

When I noticed it moving maybe about 10 years back I asked my dentist about it. He seemed a bit reluctant to do anything, saying that it would mean extracting a couple of teeth and wearing braces for possibly a year or so. Even after that, he said it couldn't be guaranteed that they wouldn't move again. He said my bite and the positioning of the other teeth were good.

The teeth have moved a bit since then and I'm wondering now, with all the advances in cosmetic dentistry, whether porcelain veneers would work for me. I remember seeing an actress on Corrie a few years back with a similar or probably worse problem to mine. <Rebecca, Martin's nurse, now in Eastenders> Lo and behold, one time she appeared with straight teeth! So I'm guessing she had veneers. Anyone any experience of this type of thing?

I had a brace when I was 12 years old free on the NHS but my teeth moved a little and were not 'perfect' in my early 20s, nobody noticed but I kept playing with a particular tooth with my tongue which was most annoying so asked my dentist about getting a brace. He referred me to a private orthordontist. They looked at my teeth and gave me a quote. This involved getting a retainer for both top and bottom set of teeth and brace for top and bottom. I had brace on for under 1 year, but had my retainer on for 2 years. Could have had my retainer removed alot sooner but I was told if it didn't bother me then I may as well keep it on as teeth gradually move anyway. Oh sorry to stray off the subject.

Brace/ retainer approx £1000 but because I paid the full amount upfront I got 5% off. You should ask them if that is an option. Saved myself about £50 in the process. ;D

With veneers do they not shave off the top layer of your tooth. I didn't fancy that as it would surely weaken your teeth and my teeth weren't that bad.

  • I always blamed my mum for my teeth being crooked till she showed me a photo of me when I was 16 and I had lovely streight teeth. turns out it was my wisdom teeth coming through that has caused the problem. she now tells every one who will listen this. which is embarrasing at the age of 33. when I told my dentist I wanted my teeth streightening he told me not to bother as everyone knew me with crooked teeth! Not the answer I was looking for. If I had the money I would pay for them streightening a long with a bust reduction and lift.

My cousin at 28 has had braces fitted on top and bottom. she had to have extractions 1st. it' s costing her a couple of thousand. But u can see the diffrence after only 6mths and she thinks it's definatly worth it.
    HOW MUCH ?
