Legal Separation

Hiya, sory if a post like this has been put on before, but I am in a bit of a pickle and have been advised to come on here by a relationship breakup site.
My husband of 19 years abandoned me last November - we had been together for 20 1/2 years. Apart from it toally devestating me as I am now completely on my own - no family, children or even friends because we spent all of our time together when he wasn't working - I am also disabled. I am really worried about my home which is in joint names but doesn't have a mortgate on it. I am so worried that he might one day push me into selling and having to get monies together to give him half the value as I wouldn't be abe to leave the property. Apart from not being able to do this financially as I can't work any longer and am not in receipt of many benefits, I would have nowhere else to go and the money I would have would not buy me another property anywhere. I would find it extremely difficult physically too and would find it so hard to cope with all that a situation like that would entail.
I have been to see a solicitor in the past but only for 1 free 1/2 hour consultation to speak briefly about things and to put my name on her files.
I wonder if a legal separation is the way to go? Does anyone know what it entails, does it compromise me if I want to get a divorce some time in the future, do I have to divide everything 50/50 with him if I go for this? Do I have to notify him or is it something I can do for my own peace of mind? So many questions I know but I am really worried about things. If any of you have applied for a legal separation would you be able to give some thoughts on this/advice please. Thanks.
