Just been charged £28 over 5p by Halifax

I've just had a letter from the Halifax telling me I will be charged £28 for going overdrawn by 5 pence. This is because of a paypal payment of 1.26 and I only had 1.21 in the account. (So my daughters cheap second hand jacket looks like costing me a bomb!) I know I should have been more on the ball, but I am just so busy and tired all the time, working and with a little one to look after too. I did think I had enough money in to cover this, I actually thought it was coming out of another account which has about £500 in it. I have three accounts with the halifax; a joint one with my husband, my own and one I usually just use for internet transactions which is the one I've come a cropper over.

I will complain, contest this. I've had a quick look at the other threads but they seem to be more about long term claims over bigger amounts. I would really appreciate it if anyone has any tips for me on getting this charge dropped. My husband is fuming and says we should just threaten to take all our accounts away from them, and then do it, but I suspect that wouldn't make any difference. Anyone got any advice?

  • If it is the first occasion then pop into the branch and see that as this was the first occasion that they would waive/refund as a one off gesture of goodwill.

Halifax has a strict charge reversal policy, stamping your feet and threatening to close your accounts isn't going to do anything. Due to the small amount overdrawn they should be able to reverse it as a one off exceptional circumstance, not a goodwill, you're allowed one of both per account with Halifax Bank of Scotland. So keep in mind if something like this has happened before on the same account then the reversal will be declined. Call telephone banking on 08457203040 and ask if you can have the charge reversed due to the small amount it caused you to go overdrawn.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

Thankyou both. I've just rang them - it was actually £63.00 overall that I was going to be charged!! But they said as it is the first time they would remove it. :T
