Applying for a credit card??

Ive never had a credit card, or taken out a loan etc. I usually save and buy and use my debit card.

I'm a FTB who has just had a mortgage offer and will probably exchange in the next week or so.

I plan to have some work down on the new place and want to apply for a credit card for the protection if can offer me on purchases over £100.

I'm worried that my mortgage lender will see the searches for a card, and revise or withdraw their offer, because they will assume that I will now have monthly credit obligations and therefore change my affordability.
Will or can they do this?

I also wanted to apply for a card before I move as I have 16 years in this place, and of course have none in the new place. Will the credit card companies see the recent searches for the Mortgage, life and contents insurance etc and decline me?

Sorry to sound so dim about this, but I really have no idea.
