Unfair Charge - Not overdrawn!

I've just been charged £35 by Halifax for a "Paid Item Charge". My rent leaves my joint account on the 23rd of each month by standing order, I also get paid on the 23rd into my sole account and a standing order goes in to the joint. Standing order is processed as a Faster Payment so is an instant payment (or at the very most within 2 hours).

My statement shows my standing order going in, before the debit for the rent, and the position at close of business on both the 22nd and 23rd was in credit.

How can they charge me?!! This is unfair!!!

Ask them. Do you get paid by direct transfer or cheque?

Regardless of the money coming in on the same day, with Halifax cleared funds have to be in the account the day before a direct debit/standing order is due to go out... This would be why the charge has come about.
