Charged for unpaid D/d when in credit

The D/D was for £5.50. I had £78 in the account. I also paid in a further £70 in cash on the same day as the D/D. Then wallop - unpaid D/d - Paypal for an ebay purchase. The next day another D/d for Paypal another item was paid.
They still haven't replied to my letter of complaint and the Natwest won't put me through to branch.0 -

Don't know about NatWest, but some banks require the money for the DD to be in the day before, not on the day (Lloyds and HSBC being the main exceptions). They might well have bounced it because of that.0 -
Surely cash clears immediately it has been entered onto the system? That's what my bank told me.0

Yes, but it needs to be in the account before they process the DD. Normally DDs are processed in the early hours of the morning.0

I had money in the account already and no outgoing commitments. The only thing I can think of is that they expected a rash of D/Ds like happened two years ago when I first when onto ebay and used paypal, and just decided to nip it in the bud - but then why pay the next d/d? The early morning thing would make sense if I had paid in the cash, but had no funds in place, but there were, even before I paid in the cash that same day.
Well I sent off the format letter for reclaiming unfair charges and today received the forms from RBS/Natwest for financial hardship. I just thought that if you were patently getting DWP benefits paid into your account you had already been means tested. Should return the financial form, or reiterate that I'm on income support and show the letter from DWP?
I've filled in the form and am about to send it back with documents in support, but will await your expert advice.
I really appreciate you all taking the time to help with this; and I wanted to let you know that.0 -
I would go into the branch and say that it was their mistake as you had £78 in the account and more money comming in, when I complained about a S/O I got the £38 back the next day. Should do it quicker than the compalints office although since you complained to the Natwest office you will have to wait up to 2 weeks or 2 months if its really compicated - not the case here. Bear in mind that its bank holiday weekend and therefore you should add an extra day on in waiting for a responseroy_harper wrote: »The D/D was for £5.50. I had £78 in the account. I gues this means you didn't recently deposit a cheque? If not then I would take the advice of the annoyed customer and pop into branch and ask them to explain what happened. If you look at Nearest Branch on their webpage you can find a number for the local branch and you could just call them.0

Is OP sure that the charge relates to this transaction or could it be a charge from a previous month?0
