older charges?

If anyone can help? I had an account with Nat West some years ago and used it for a business, which subsequently went bust. Towards the end of my business, I went overdrawn over my limit and owed about £800. With interest charges etc, this ended up at nearly £7000. They have been after me on and off since about 1990 for this, which I cannot pay. Could I try to claim these back? The A/c had been passed to a debt agency, but has just been sent back to the bank because I have not been able to pay.

Any ideas? Thanks

How long ago is some years ago? When was the last time that you acknowledged the debt?
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

  • Thanks for replying. The business ran through 1988 into 1999. I tried to pay some back, but was out of work raising children as single parent for about ten years and didn't hearanything fromNW for a few years. Not quite sure how long. Was going to take it to ombudsman years ago, but took so long before I heard from them (about five years, I think) that I gave up. Heard from Nat West debt collectors end of last year or beginning of this, but have not done anything about it, apart from write to say that I am currently out of work, on JAS and cannot pay anything.

    Cheers.
  • Sorry, wrong dates on last reply, it was 1988 - 1989

    So 6.2k in charges basically.

I'd just tell them you wont be paying that 6.2k charges because they are unfair, disproportionate and ridiculous and will make a payment arrangement of £10 a month on the £800 (if you can afford to), then if they want to take you to court I think you could quite easily argue the charges are removed. they can hardly argue limitations on you when they are chasing a debt from 88.

I cant see you getting any money out of it, but should wipe that debt back to a sensible levl.
