Asked to sign up for a JD sport credit card despite being 17

Hello All

Today I was asked If I wanted 10% off my purchase at JD sports - while browsing for clothes.

Anyway

JD sports women: 'Do you want 10% off your purchase today'
Me: 'YES! Please :money: '
JD sports women: 'How old are you'
Me: '17'
JD sports women 'Oh..so you are not 18'
Me: 'No'
JD sports women 'Well I'll just ask'
Me 'Ok'
JD sports women 'When Is your birthday'
Me 'July'
JD sports women 'oh I'ld let you have it if you was say a month away'

I was shocked, at first I thought 10% off was excellent, however she mentioned nothing of the credit card when she first came over. What worries me is she was prepared to sign me up for a credit card, If I was a month away from being 18! - arent you supposed to be 18 for signing up for a credit card.

Anyway, In true money saving - I bought some clothing which was CHEAPER in store, than it was online - then went back home and purchased the remaining goods online via Quidco saving £19 on a £300 purchase. :money:

I thought it was 18 but maybe someone knows for sure?

Yes it is 18 - if you signed it at 17, then the contract would not be valid. You could spend as much as you like on the card and the card issuer wouldn't be able to do anything about it when you refuse to pay it back.

That was a bit naughty of her. I'm sure she was on a commission system - if she'd managed to get you signed up she'd get some cash. Perhaps she would have been willing to take the risk if you weren't far off 18.

Or alternatively, she may have considered hanging on to the application until your birthday, then putting it through their system.

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j
