Waiting days

What are DWP waiting days for?

We are on a course at the moment and it came up in discussion and an ex DWP employee of 30 years didnt know, niether did the trainer - we all heard theories but no one knew for definate and we couldnt see anything on DWP site about them explaining them.

So I can look all knowledgable tomorrow does anyone actually know? Thanks in advance :)

When I worked there over 30 years ago , the first three days of a claim for unemployment benefit were called "waiting days" and were not paid out till someone had been unemployed for two weeks.

This changed a few years later and then got paid straight away.

I know what they are ...I just cant find a reason for them .... why do they have to be served? Is it administration times from years ago or ...i cant even remember some theories....they were a bit dull but left me wondering why ... ta for link, still confused.

Im on a course for housing and council tax benefit...I recently started assessing and am the first to admit i have no prior experience and im a learner, so if/when i post i try to include reference to that as i post with limited knowledge :) we all know a little knowledge can be dangerous LOL but i try - and when corrected or told im wrong i welcome it as its a good way to learn more! :)

I think it was to stop people claiming for every saturday and sunday when they weren't working, but working casual jobs

When I was training recently, my trainer said it was from back in the day where people would be expected to be back in work within the 3 days. They set it up because if they paid from day one you would process the claim and begin payment only for them to sign off a day or two later then the claim would have to be closed again. It has just stuck from then incase they change their mind about claiming.

Dont know how true this is but sounds possible, some of the reasons behind some of the things I learned where abit strange!
