Was a company car mentioned at the interview or in your contract?
Whats your objection to a company car?0 -
Does your contract give you a choice? Do you colleagues get a choice?Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

This has nothing to do with benefits; perhaps someone can move it to the Employment Board.0

The answer anyway is yes they can. You can decline to use it, but will be on your own as far as expenses are concerned.0

At some point within your employment you should have signed something like "Car user" form. You usually have to show your licence, MOT, insurance details etc at the same time.
The form goes on about keeping the car legal and only clamining for work journeys.
Somewhere in there it will state that if you do more than x miles, they can insist you take a company car, or let you keep using your car but only claiming the company car allowance for miles.
The x (limit) is usually after 6000 miles (at about 40p a mile) then they want you on company car allowance where its 10-12p a mile, but you get a company car.
Any of this ring any bells?

When I had a temporary contract I was allowed to use my own car and got 50p a mile, regular car users allowance which was about £60 a month. I applied for the permanent post and was told I would have to have a company car during the interview. All my colleagues use their own car but all staff going on to new contracts have to have a company car if they do more than 3000 miles a year. I ended up losing about £600 a month when I got the post as I get no milage (they take £40 a month off the cost of the lease car instead and I definitely use more than £40 fuel a month for work), I have to pay for personal use of the car and I get taxed higher. So am actually worse off, however it was worth it to get job security.0
