*Moneysaving Ideas For Christening Buffet*

We are having a christening & as OH's family are scattered to the 4 corners, we thought it'd be nice to have a 'do' after the ceremony so everyone can mingle & catch up. As they are travelling up, we decided hire the church hall & to lay on a buffet as it's cheap & easy.
Doing the maths, it's working out not-as-cheap as originally thought. We feel cheeky 'inviting' them to a meal that they'd have to pay for themselves so any money-saving tips on food would be great!

ps, we aren't having any alcohol & were looking at a non-alcoholic punch with sparkling apple or grape juice for a toast....again any ideas would be great!

  • Hi Freebie_Hunter

I do a lot of buffets (we're a big family with what seems to be no end of occassion to celebrate :rotfl:) and I agree with you the cost can easily spiral out of control. How many ppl are you catering for? and do you have any facilites at the Church Hall for heating things up?

I would keep it simple, I'm sure you have enough to organise that day.
If it's cold how about, cold meat, salad, sliced baguettes, sauasge rolls, cold pizza slices, crisps and dips, pakora, rice and pasta salad and maybe some cold desserts like apple pie and cream or a triffle. Most of this can be made in advance and quite cheaply if you make it yourself, or you could go to the supermarket and see whats on offer and choose that way what to have.

If you could make it hot then you could serve a choice of a couple of meals, like a bog pot of chilli, a nice stew or a curry with breads, rice or jackets and a choice of puddings.

    Hope this helps:rolleyes:
  • Thanks!
Looking at about 60 people & we do have a commercial cooker at the hall.
