Watch out for renewals

Im sure this has been covered here before, but here goes:

I received my Direct Line renewal letter today, and because it was on automatic renewal I didnt have to do a thing.. Thing is, the same insurance (building & content), same values, same excess, the same insurer quoted me £60 cheaper online. You would think a renewal would be cheaper than taking out a new insurance (less paperwork, etc, etc), but no, it would be cheaper for me to cancel my current insurance and take out a new policy. The chap at Direct Line just told me he couldnt tell me what to do.. But Guess what? Im cancelling. :)

Surely they should be able to match their own online quote?

Unless it's from another site, it would be pretty dumb if they couldn't.

Direct Line wouldnt.. I asked him if I had to cancel and take out a new policy, or could they match the online quote.. He said they wouldnt.

We have our house insurance with Direct Line too and every year, I take out a new policy with them as it's always cheaper than their renewal quote  . If you go through Quidco, you also get £27 cash back.
I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....

Thanks Noozan.. Good thing I didnt take out the insurance yet. :)
  • Same here with direct line. I always ignore the renewal and take out a new policy. And get £14 cash back via ecashback, but i'll have a look at quidco. I'm just checking for a new quote at the moment and it's £70 chesper than lasts years anyway! And after claiming for a lovely new sofa last year with direct line, i can vouch for there speediness at paying up.
  • Think that's probably the same with most insurance. I asked why and was told it was because they offered special discounts to new customers to get them (bit like banks) unfortunately once they are "got" they don't seem to care anymore and rely on the fact that people will accept the next years quote without checking it out.

I have just saved £153 by taking out a new online House/Contents insurance policy with Direct Line compared with my renewal premium for exactly the same policy.
(Last year they gave me a 25% discount as a new customer - looks like they were trying to get the money back through this years premium increase !!!)
In addition a also will get £27 cashback with topcashback.co.uk.
My advice is ALWAYS check the options before renewing your policy

I had the same thing with kwikfit car ins years ago. When I asked about it they said their renewal quote was the cheapest of just 5 looked at when the computer put it through automatically...in other words they hadnt really bothered to look!!
Debt free = December 2010...as of March 2006 it is now January 2010..... as of December 2008 it is now December 2009 :j hopefully sooner!!
:jDEBT FREE:j January 2012, took longer but I got there, all by myself, through sheer hard work and pride!
