Well i got a letter back saying:

After reviewing your claim as you do not appeared to have paid any income tax in the year 2002-2003 no repayment is due. If you also made a claim for the years 2001-2002 this can not be considered.

Does that mean i havent paid tax on my wages when working? if so im sure i did as worked full time from Jan 2001 and only left 3 years ago. Or does it mean something else?

Can anyone help as not sure this is right..
    Thanks.

You need to check your P60 for that year as that will have your pay and tax details. If you have lost it then call your tax office and ask them what employment details they have for you for that year.

Yes the Childrens Tax Credit was the forerunner to the current Tax credit system which is Working Tax credit and Child Tax Credit.

Childrens Tax credit was given as tax relief to the higher earner in a couple if you were part of one or yourself if you were a single parent. To administer this they gave parents an extra tax free allowance in their tax code. That meant only working parents got it. Those on benefits already received extra money for their children through that system. However if you were working you had to have actually been earning enough to pay tax. The CTC in the tax code would therefore reduce the amount of tax payable. What everyone has been receiving in the past few months is a tax rebate. If you weren't earning enough to be liable to any tax then there is no rebate due as no tax was paid in the first place.

If you were working for your current employer in 2002/2003 then they should be able to check if you did pay tax.
