I'm going to help my gramps apply for Attendance Allowance. Can anyone advise me on what things I need to tell them? My gramps has difficulty with just about everything. Washing, dressing, walking, seeing, hearing, remembering to eat.

    Hi

I would recommend cab or your local council's welfare rights service. In our area the Pension Service also do a home benefit check and help with form filling. there is also help from age concern too and a very good guide on their website.

You've got the right idea. Convert any help needed into bodily functions. These can included washing, dressing, etc but also seeing, hearing, going out, communicating.

It doesn't matter what he spends his money on if he is successful. In theory he could blow it on loose women and alcohol- bless him!!

This benefit is about the help and care that he needs and not necessarily gets. If you think about it many people on this benefit live alone and do not get any help with their needs.

If he does get it, he may be eligible for other benefits too or increased benefits.

Go for it or get help. You can only do your best.

  • Hi

I am pretty sure that Attendance Allowance dont take into consideration mobility problems only care needs. It sounds like he should apply.

I'm with Cabbage on this one - if you feel that you may struggle with wording the form, make an appointment with either CAB or Age concern for help in completing these. In my opinion, these forms are designed to catch people out and you have to word things just so to stand a chance of getting it first time.

My father in law has degenerative macular disease, peripheral vascular disease, diabetes. amputated toes and does struggle but wants to live independently. He went to Age Concern who helped him with the forms and he was granted his allowance. It has been a great help to him.

My Mum (81) is suffering very badly from depression and anxiety and has been under the psychiatric unit at the local hospital for over a year and attends their day centre 3 days a week. She also visits a therapist privately each week. She's on a cocktail of very strong medication plus she has several other health issues. She's widowed and lives alone but my husband and I visite 3/4 times a week & speak several times a day on the phone to her. We do all her shopping, cleaning, gardening, look after her finances, deal with her GP medication etc. She's been claiming Council Tax benefits for the last year but receives no other benefits. We've had so much to deal with over the last year claiming benefits wasn't our top priorty but it's suddenly dawned on me that she might be eligible for attendance allowance because of all her problems. Received the forms this morning and have made a start but it's a little daunting  but have learnt a lot from these message boards. Does anyone know if they can back date allowance (if granted) or is it only payable from the date claimed? don't want to sound greedy and would be grateful for anything she can receive.
