Jsa Self-employed

Hello,

Basically ive been for my appointment for a claim of JSA today. This was after a 1 hour phone call yesterday with someone who took all my details.

I get to the appointment and they say no you cant have anything because you have been self-employed and you ONLY pay class 2 and 4 NI. So im very annoyed that the person on the phone never pointed out this would be the case.

Anyway my question is, ive been self-employed for 5 years and PAYE before that for 5 years. So dont my NI class 1 for the previous 5 years whilst PAYE count for anything towards JSA now.

thanks from a very stressed person.

You might not be able to claim JSA but you could apply for income support. Are you still self employed, if so try asking for working tax credits if you are on a low income.

As someone who is also self employed I was able to get Income based allowance last year so you should be able to get this.

Depends on OP's circumstances. If he has a partner who is working or has over £16000 in savings then JSA income based will not apply.

JSA contribution based is calculated on the NI paid in the last two complete tax years before the beginning of the calender year so for this year it is based on 06/07 and 07/08 tax years. Class 2 contributions are paid at a much lower rate than class 1, so I think that this is the reason that they don't count for JSA.

    thanks for replies.

yes i have a partner she earns bout £80 per week.

they spoke about income based JSA. and said if she earns less than £105 per week then i can claim up to THE £105. EG if she earns £80 ill get £25 in JSA. or if she earns £5 ill get £100.

So basically the most money me and my partner can get is £105 between us per week.
