I am in a wheelchair and I use a 'proximity swipe' card to remotely open a couple of key inner doors in my house and one of them has stopped working. It was installed over three years ago so I assumed it was out of warranty but I have been quoted a £160 callout fee alone by the installation company. No doubt there will be additional charges plus VAT. I'm not a happy chappie!

    Could a local electrician do it? Or, does your local council have a Care and Repair Service? If so they will often do small repairs for free. Call your local council and ask. Or call Care and Repair Headquarters directly on 0115 9506500.

    Hi, thank you for your replies. I did actually call Care and Repair but they couldn't help as apparently there were no funds available to me and according to an electrician the problem is likely to be with the circuit board which is manufactured by the same company that installed it and a 'rival' company couldn't touch it either for the same reason. I have asked them if there was a likelihood that they would need to be in this area in the near future but they have yet to respond.

    Could you buy a secondhand one from eBay and get a local electrician to switch it?
