cd drive not found....help please?

my sons laptop has stopped finding cds - it just keeps saying please insert disc but, there is a disc in (have tried different discs and dvds to no avail)....

If its a laptop drive that uses the smaller tray then if you open it, can you see the lens? If so give that a clean with some isoprol alchohol on a cotton bud or some lens cleaning solution. Then try again, otherwise the drive may just be a write off. Also you could try uninstalling the CD drive from device manager and letting windows reinstall it.0
