Mums & Dads (child carers) HRP NI credit

Pension shortfall for Mums & Dads (child carers) HRP Those with shortfalls in their pension contributions and not paying a NI Stamp, because they are at home child rearing but not receiving HRP can make it up - see how below.
It affects those that have been the “Primary Child Carer” whilst their partner is in full time work.
Since, I believe 2007, the Home Responsibilities Protection (HRP) requirements changed. Those at home with the children would normally elect to be the recipient of “Child Benefit” and they would get the credit for the pension. That has ceased and now allows either of the carers (typically man/woman husband/wife) to receive the pension credit by making a claim for the pension credit provided the Child Benefit claimant is working.
If you are the primary child carer, but your partner receives the “Child benefit” (and that partner is working and is thus paying towards their pension via NI) the person at home can apply to have the HRP pension credit transferred to the child carer i.e. the one at home actually looking after the children!
The normal method for the HRP element to be paid towards the carers pension is often the wife/woman receiving the “Child benefit” and this triggers the NI contribution toward the pension but you can now ask for it to be retrospectively transferred to the one at home, irrespective of whether you were the actual recipient of the child benefit.
If this is your situation it is simple but does require very precise explanation to the person(s) you may speak to or write to as some of the administrators/call handlers are not aware of this change.:j
