I need a new wok

I am looking for a new wok as the last one got some food welded to the bottom of it and was retired to the bin!

I have currently got a halogen hob, which I guess narrows the choice a little. It has to be thick enough to not warp on the heat so that it actually cooks the food.

I like the idea of a le creuset one although I am a little concerned about the weight of it.

Any suggestions?

Well I got a cheap one from Asda last week and that was a good one - but that could have been too cheap?

  • Cheap is fine as long as it will last and not warp.

It was £2.44 and was the best I have had for cooking with so far!

Check out TK Maxx if you have one near you. They sell some excellent woks, saucepans, frying pans etc and well below rrp. I bought my wok from there and it is excellent!

Go to your local chinese supermarket and get a steel wok (about £7 to £15 ish) Season it well before you first use it and dry on the hob after every use - it will never stick and serve you well for years and years.

Yes, mines a carbon steel one as well - just wash it out with hot water after use, bung it back on the hob for a minute or so to dry off, then tip a little oil in and swidge round with a bit of kitchen roll. I use gas - not sure about the warping, mine hasn't with many years of use, normally on full heat.

Chinese cooks see the blackness of their wok as a status symbol...
  • The only problem is that I am currently using a halogen hob, which really doesn't perform well unless the base is really flat and makes good contact.

I went to TKMax today - Unfortunately they did not have what I was looking for.
  • Try tesco's, I bought a teflon one for my daughter it was on offer, I have the same one, had it for years and its still going strong. I think the one i bought for my daughter was £10.48.

    happy cooking!

Well i got one from tescos which was their own range and it cost me £2.41 or somewhere there. Its a solid sturdy sort with non stick interior and dark grey outside. I still think it must have been mispriced but when i was in there the other day i saw more of them hanging up. I often use it, not everyday but 2 or 3 times a week and it hasnt warped or anything. It was a great buy.

I currently have a round based wok which sits on a stand on my gas ring. You can also get flat based steel woks too as I used to have one when I had a halogen hob. :)
