Filtering Water

A bit of a rant and a moan.
For years and years most households and businesses in my area have no choice but filter their water for boiling to make drinks. If we boil water without filtering it, it is absolutly fowl, like a tinny taste. At first I thought it was my kettle but obviously over the years this has been replaced.
At one address we even had Severn Trent to test the water and they said that water boiled straight from the water has certain chemicals in that react with being boiled but remains harmless  Just tastes disgusting.
Why should homeowner have no choice but to fork out for the expense of filter cartridges, surely they should give homeowners/businesses some sort of rebate if they have to do this.
Does anyone else have this in their home?
