Bridges on the NHS?

My dad was recently dragged to the dentist and was told he needs 3 teeth removing and a bridge in its place- dentists quoted him £1000 just for this no cleaning or fillings etc (my dad has amazingly bad teeth!)
does that sound right - the cost or can it be done on the NHS?

This is not a NHS charge.
That being said a NHS dentist will be very unlikely to replace three teeth with a bridge a denture will be a far more likely option . This will be a band three treatment £177 in Wales £189 ish in England and ? around £100 ish in Scotland (not too sure on their charges).
the only other thing to be aware of is if denture is fitted directly after teeth out a new one may be necessary in a few months time as the gum changes shape as it heals. This will involve a further charge.0 -
Why did they offer such a poor attender with 'bad teeth' something as advanced and needing such a lot of self care as a bridge??How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
not sure tbh, im not sure how my dad got such bad teeth but as a child he went to the kind of dentist who's answer to everything was a filling or pulling them out. One of them is smashed and so needs to be pulled another is rotton and the last is a root that needs to be pulled. The smashed one was as a result of an attempt to fix the one next to it so understandably he does not trust them anymore. And secondly he always knew it was going to cost a small fortune this is without all the other stuff he needs such as a few filings and bleaching (heavy smoker)
after all that he may start to look half decent!keep calm and carry on :rotfl:

No one needs bleaching!
Especially a heavy smoker. Waste of money.
Sounds very much to me like he'd be better off putting his money towards a decent denture.
No advanced treatment should be offered to anybody without huge change in behaviour from patients. It's pointless, and a waste of the patients money. How to find a dentist.

A recent visit to a new dentist got me a quote of £800 for a bridge with 2 teeth. When I enquired about nhs options I was told it would just be a plate with 2 teeth attached, which I didn't fancy.
I Decided to visit the dentist I used before I moved & the 2 teeth bridge is going to cost £650 there, so obviously pays to shop around! The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
