certificate error

A lot of sites we go on will not open as it says there is a problem with this website's security certificate, so we use the option: continue to this website (not recommended).
They are sites we have always used such as My Ebay, Paypal etc.
It started doing this over the weekend, our security level is set at med. high, it does not make a difference which setting it is on, We use Avira anti virus but can't see anything to reset.
Any ideas?

Sounds as though you're using IE as your browser. Are your Windows Updates up-to-date? It looks like one or more of your Root certificates - including the main Verisign one - have expired.

However, you can also get this problem if your PCs date has been set wrong.

In that case, if your PC is several years old I would consider replacing the motherboard CMOS backup battery, which also usually keeps the real time clock running. It's usually (but not always) a CR2032 coin cell.
