    Hi Leah

Its funny you should mention that, I also have been having a problem with the inland revenue, they have told me that I failed the security checks when I called up and have asked me to confirm my national insurance number even though I have had the same number for 36 years and know 100% percent it is right.
Is there something going on with the information at the inland revenue, be good to know if anybody else has had the same problems
Unfortuantely I spoke to a horrible lady who was rude, I am worried as thought it might be a fraud issue and nobody can answer my questions.I have lived at the same address for 10 years and know all my details, why have I failed a secuirty check how stupid is that?

Has someone taken on your NI number perhaps?

I had a call like that from the bank once and i refused to believe it was them, put the phone down and called them back.

Sounds like your National Insurance number (NINO) might be being used by someone else. That can either be fraud or an honest mistake by someone elses employer or even them. The best thing you can do is make an appointment at your local HMRC Enquiry centre and take along as many proofs of ID as possible such as passport, driving license, birth certificate, medical card also utility bills with your name and address on them. The EC can verify your identification and pass along the details to your tax office to get the confusion sorted asap.

Just another little note. For some reason nowadays we see many people coming in who have NINO's which are nearly identical to one of their siblings. My own 2 daughters who were born 3 years apart have NINO's which are the same except for the last number and letter. Now if siblings have the same initials you can imagine the confusion that can arise by accident certainly were their employment is concerned.

    Hi Pam,

Thanks for the advice- good idea , Its just that the people/woman I spoke to you make you feel like a criminal even though I am the innocent party and have nothing to hide, I guess things like this can happen so easily.
