Car insurance cost for a written off car

Some loveable little rogues  decided that my old 1l micra should be taken for a joyride earlier this week. Luckily, it appears that they didnt do too much damage, apart from a knackered passenger door, and some of the plastic work. However, as my car is in the 'vintage' stage of its life - I work with people younger than my car, I expect that the insurance company are going to say its uneconomical to repair it, and hence write it off. I reckon from looking at the car it should be easy to fix - and its still roadworthy from what I can tell. What are the downsides of buying it back from the insurance company, and basically repairing it and keeping it? What do I need to do to do get the car back on the road if I take this course of action?
Thanks, and sorry if this has been asked before - I couldnt see any other threads on this

Someone run into the back of my previous car trying to squeeze past when i was turning right. result, broken light and bumper and dented and scratched door
i had full comp insurance they sent out an engineer to look at it, i told him i wanted to keep it on the road he told me it would be uneconomical to repair and tell the insurance company i wanted to buy the car back. They paid me £800 less £250 what they wanted for the car and the insurance cover continued as it wasnt my fault.I also paid £30 for bumper & light from breakers yard.
You need to be sure, it is only cosmetic or minor damage otherwise things can get complicated and expensive with vehicle inspections and the like. Good luck.
