Being made redundant - but same job being advertised

Asking on behalf of my partner. They have worked at the company for just under a year and today received notice that 6 of a larger group are being made redundant due to downsizing. However, the same job is currently advertised on the job centre website, for the same company area code [the area within which employees would be expected to work as the job involves working in different places] albeit with the job locations specified being different and quite a distance from where my partner lives [although my partner has worked in those areas]. I would think that, if the job positions advertised are genuinely available, the positions themselves are not redundant, and that the company is attempting to reduce the cost of transport paid to employees for travelling to the locations - by means of making some redundant and employing people who live closer to the areas the work will be.
Any input or advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Bump as there's a meeting tomorrow and any "ammunition" might be handy.0

No harm in your partner asking the company about these. They could be considered as suitable alternative employment if your partner is ok with the location. You probably realise that your partner is not entitled to any statutory redundancy pay unfortunately. Or company might be trying to cause a break in service so that people do not build up employment rights. Also has your partner been consulted about the possible redundancy or just given their notice?0

Being consulted (supposedly) but seems very much like they've already made the decision who's going if you know what I mean.0
