What should I wear to interview ??

Hi all, I have an interview on Thursday for an absolutely perfect job. I am confident about my skills and experience but have no idea as to what I should wear. It is an office based public facing role, so I need to look smart but is a suit a bit over the top these days ? What about make up ? Shoes ? Any advice would be so gratefully received . :D

  • Firstly, good luck with the interview. I have always worked in an office environment and have worn a suit for every interview. You can always wear a more casual top under your jacket if you don't want to look too stuffy. I would keep make up quite natural and shoes flat and comfy. You never know, they might decide to give you a tour of the building.
I know people who have gone to interviews wearing jeans and t shirts and still got the job, but I was always told to wear something smart to make a good first impression.
Once you get the job, you'll have an idea of how casual you can go, I am now sitting at work wearing jeans and t shirt :rotfl:

Yes - definately wear a suit and shoes that are comfortable

Make-up is upto you but make it subtle if you do use it

Then once you have seen how others dress there you can dress similarly if you get the job
  • I always wear a suit to every interview. Its about putting your best foot forward. When you work there you can tailor how you dress to suit.
    Light make up.
I always wear high heels (bit of confidence boost) but whatever works for you. (even a bit of false confidence can go a long way)
Just think look smart, no matter what the job is.
    That mrs macchicken to you!
  • Sorry forgot to say
    GOOD LUCK!

Good luck for your interview jazzypinkpuppet.

I agree that wearing a suit is a good idea. I would wear a cotton blouse because a polyester/synthetic mix would make me feel hot and sweaty...........when I'd already be feeling anxious in the interview anyway. Make sure your shoes are polished and spotlessly clean.

If you must wear jewellery, stud earrings rather than dangly and a plain necklace chain rather than a big bright colourful necklace, one ring rather than rings on every finger..............less is better.

Don't wear over-powering strong perfume, it might be perfect for a night out but not for an interview or the workplace.;)

Wear brand new tights and take a spare pair in your handbag, just in case of snags.

Make sure you know exactly where the interview venue is so that you don't arrive late and flustered. I've done a reccy (spelling?) for some job interviews, to time the journey and check for car parking and double check I know how to find the venue.

Smile and try to take deep breaths and relax, first impressions count.

Let us know how you get on.

Brilliant advice from Nile. Just to add - make sure your clothes are clean and brushed. One woman I interviewed lost it before the interview started because her jacket was covered in cat hairs. I always worked on the principle that people coming for interview were presenting themselves at their very best and, day-to-day at work, their standards will probably to a little lower. If she wasn't clean and tidy at interview, what on earth would she be like at other times?
  • Thankyou so much for your advice, I think I will have to go suit shopping tomorrow, any excuse !!! :D Would a trouser suit be ok ??
I am starting to get quite nervous now but I just keep thinking that I must be suitable or they wouldn't have called me for an interview.
I just have to blow them away with my new suit at the interview, and the job will be mine, all mine ne ha ha ha (scary witch laugh) Wish me luck :j
  • i think a trouser suit would be fine jazzy

good luck hope it goes well and please let us know how you get on
