Luxury toilet paper is more harmful to the environment than gas-guzzling cars

I think that posh toilet paper is horrible. I use Lidl's cheapest recycled stuff. It gives you a much better feel for what you're doing.

We are presently using Natural Collection luxury paper, as it has a high ethiscore. Despite buying forty rolls, my order arrived in packs of four wrapped in plastic. The batch was then wrapped in yet more plastic, and the carboard box lined with ... layers and layers of plastic.

I haven't had the problem with the batch being wrapped in plastic, or the box being lined with plastic. I have a feeling that they use whatever packaging they have lying around.

However, I'm also not thrilled by the 4s being wrapped in plastic, so am planning on moving to traidcraft, as they also get a high ethiscore... the only problem being that I don't buy anything else from them at the moment!

Greenpeace did an article about this also, which goes in to some more detail.

As for the traidcraft paper, I'm pleased that it's 100% recycled paper, but it is still packaged in plastic last time I saw any. I haven't seen loo paper wrapped in paper packaging for a very long time.

The co-op sell loo paper in degradable plastic, and sainsburys have recycling bins for the LDPE plastic films their loo paper is wrapped in. But, I'd still prefer to just have paper wrapping I could easily recycle in my wheelie bin.

You're right... very disappointing. It's a long time since I last looked at it!

Ben84...we've seen some at our local hfs (I think it was Suma maybe?) that had compostable wrapping, but the quality was bleah. We get Waitrose recycled brand, or Naturelle (think that's what it's called), both with plastic packaging labelled for recycling.

Not to be too "chip on my shoulder here", but I've seen just as plenty "multi-ply" "extra soft" yada yada toilet paper in the UK as in the States or Canada. :p

  • Is it too difficult to stack them two or three high wrap them in paper and fold into the hollow middle? I think andrex used to do this but they have one of the worst ethiscores.

    Or just sell them loose?

Yesterday I found that one of the M&S loo paper packages is wrapped in some kind of bioplastic that you can compost at home. The packaging is green, I didn't think to check the others, but will look next time I'm there.

So far this is the only one I've found that you can compost the packaging.
