help being made to feel like scum because of claiming job seekers allowance

  • But not everyone who is on disability allowance is physically disabled. My hubby is on it for an indefinate period due to his illness but he can quite easily dig up a garden or do other manual work as his is a mental disability.

This is the kind of prejudice that you take when on any kind of benefit, as people are not aware of the full facts of each case.
I used to suffer from lack of motivation.... now I just can't be arsed.

If you think you have to jump through hoops in this country try claiming benefits in the USA that'll really make you mad.

Strange you should mention that, i've actually been offered 4 jobs over in the US and 2 in Canada in the past 3 years (through contacts). Both of which paid 3-4 times my latest salary, but I just can't bare the thought of leaving friends/family behind

Yeah i know this, my friend is on incapacity for a personality disorder, i'm just saying you do wonder about some people though. It's natural to.

Right... I don't see what your saying?

I worked from the time I left school at 16. Why?
Because I chose do this rather than starting a 10 child family and living off the state OR faking disability OR a combination of both.

While im on the subject: the faking disability thing really annoys me too btw, possibly more than any other benifits scam. I have a friend way up near manchester somewhere who was injured in Afganistan, he then contracted MRSA in a British hospital and is physically unable to work in most job roles because of it. He can't get any help whatsoever on the disability side and has gone through phases of living in total poverty, not even eating a meal for a whole week in some cases, he recently had his JSA cut because of an "admin mistake" at the local Jobcentre and the response was "not our problem".
One hell of a way to treat someone who fought for this country in a war which wrongly or rightly (this is not the place to discuss) we got ourselves into.

Anyhoo, back to the OP i think.

What I am saying is if you want to call people scum be prepared for other to judge you the same. There is no way of knowing a persons personal details, how do you know someone is faking disability, or that someone with a load of kids didn't once have very different circumstances? If you want to just guess well then somewhere some busy body will do the same to your friend.

If you have called unemployed people scum in the past and suddenly find yourself unemployed now you can not expect people to give you special treatment and look into your particular circumstances.
